Senior Thesis Guidelines

Allow a minimum of three (3) quarters to complete your senior thesis. Seniors who enroll in GSC 461 two quarters prior to their expected graduation date usually find themselves delaying their graduation and post-graduation plans in order to finish their senior thesis. "I need to graduate!" and/or "I have to start graduate school next quarter" are not sufficient reasons for attempting to petition out of senior thesis. The Geological Sciences Department expects completion of the Senior Thesis; it is a degree requirement.

By default, all students will receive a grade of "RP" for GSC 461 & GSC 462. Your advisor will change the "RP" grade into a letter grade when you successfully complete your senior thesis and Senior Seminar (GSC 463).

Registration in GSC 461 or GSC 462 and the "RP" grades that are given are valid for a one-year period from the time the "RP" grade is assigned. If it has been more than a year since your enrollment in GSC 461 or GSC 462, then you will need to register again for GSC 461 and/or GSC 462 in order to receive a final letter grade. Note: under extraordinary circumstances you may be able to petition for an extension of your RP in 461 and 462 beyond the one year period, thus eliminating the requirement to re-enroll. However, this can only be done with the approval or your advisor and the Department Chair. Furthermore, there is no guarantee Records will honor the petition.
