Earthquake scarp along the Lone Pine fault, west of Lone
Pine, CA. Although this scarp shows
more than 15 feet of vertical displacement, only 4 feet is thought to be attributable to the "great"
earthquake of 1872. The remaining 10-12 feet of vertical displacement results from two previous
earthquakes during the past 10,000 years. The remarkable preservation of this fault scarp results
from the rain shadow effect of the Sierras and restricted development.
