Senior Theses I Have Supervised
- Bruns, Jessy - Current Jessy is examining a rare earth property in southern Nevada.
- Holstrom, Tanya - Current Tanya is studying the basalts of the Pisgah and Amboy volcanic fields.
- Michalka, Leianna - Current Leianna is working on the geochemistry of the volcanic rocks of the Long Valley caldera.
- Julie Brown - 2008 Geochemistry and Petrography of the Jurassic Metasedimentary and Metavolcanic Units of the Alabama Hills and Southern Inyo Mountains Near Lone Pine, CA.
Julie examined the plutonic and metasedimentary rocks of the Alabama Hills in an attempt to correlate the rock sequence with lithologically similar rocks in the southern Inyo Mountains.
- Lusk, Matt - 2007 Geochemical and Petrographic Analyses of the Basalts of the Darwin Plateau, Inyo County, CA; Evidence for Multi-dimensional Variation Governing the Production of Volcanic Fields in the Owens Valley.
Matt studied the Neogene volcanic rocks of the Darwin Plateau and compared their geochemistry and petrology to other volcanic flows in the southern Owens Valley. He received an award from the Southern California Academy of Science for his research.
- Burns, Randal - 2006 A Re-Evaluation of the Veteran Extension of the Robinson District of White Pine County, NV.
Randal re-examined a portion of a porphyry copper ore body lying outside of the present pit boundary and redefined the economic potential of that ore offshoot. His research led to a permanent position with Quadra Resources owners of the Robinson Mine.
- Varnell, Ashley - 2006 Petrology and Geochemistry of the Big Pine Volcanic Field, Inyo County, CA.
Ashley followed up on earlier work of Cami Anderson, comparing the Big Pine volcanics to those of the Ricardo Formation, 60 miles to the south. She was instrumental in unraveling the relationship of petrology and geochemistry to the genesis of Owens Valley basalts.
- Anderson, Cami Jo - 2005 A Geochemical and Petrographic Analysis of the Basalts of the Ricardo Formation Southern El Paso Mountains, CA.
Cami undertook a comprehensive investigation of the Ricardo volcanics. Her study formed the foundation of work undertaken by a number of students in the following years and was the basis for several subsequent publications.
- Strom, Jon - 2003 X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy of Silver-Barite Hydrothermal Mineralization in the Central Mojave Silver-Barite District, San Bernardino County, CA.
Jon was the first Cal Poly student to utilize XRF to examine compositional variation in a suite of volcanic rocks, in this case from the Calico Mining District. Jon demonstrated that XRF could be a vital tool in the study of volcanic rocks.
