Miocene Conglomerates of the Puddingstone Lake Area

I continue to be fascinated with Miocene and Pliocene conglomerates exposed near Puddingstone Lake and in the San Jose Hills.  Undergraduate student Andrew McLarty (B.Sc., Cal Poly Pomona, 2000) demonstrated that many of the clasts appear to be derived from the nearby Glendora Volcanics whereas certain conglomerate beds indicate a more distant eastern San Gabriel Mountains source.  McLarty’s data suggest existence of an unroofing sequence.  Detailed study of these conglomerates and adjacent strata will better constrain the paleogeography of the Pomona region during a time when the Los Angeles basin was forming.  The area continues to provide an accessible laboratory (just 5 minutes from campus) for numerous Cal Poly Pomona students.
